Germany 1945

When the 29th were in Germany the M43 Jacket was now pretty much mainstream issue however the M43 trousers are rarely seen. Replacements were possibly issued them in the replacement depot but the old 29ers wore their wool trousers still from what we can tell.

The smaller helmet net is seen to be the most common net or no net at all. Helmet insignia is still standard. The Haversack is still the most common pack however more musette bags and suspenders are noticed on NCO's. Double buckle boots are standard.

Cold weather kit like gloves, scarfs and jumpers are common due to the weather. OD7 equipment is becoming more common and a mixture of equipment colours is acceptable.

For the Ruhr river crossing life belts were issued again.

The overall look of Germany 1945 is very worn out and cold.

M43 Jacket

The M43 Jacket is the most common jacket worn by the 29th at this point however footage shows the occasional M41 still being worn.

Cold weather equipment

Beanie hats, gloves and scarfs are common in Germany due to the weather in early 1945.

OD7 Gas mask bags

OD7 equipment is becoming more common as replacements fresh in from the USA are issued with the newer equipment.

Dismounted Rain Coat

The dismounted rain coat is an essential item as wet clothes become even colder at night.

Double Buckle Boots

The double buckle boot is worn by almost all 29ers by this point. The boots should be protected using dubbing which turns them a dark almost black colour.

5 button jumper

The 5 button jumper was a much loved piece of warm kit to wear under the M43 Jacket.

M1944 Pack:

The M1944 pack deserves its own section as it is a commonly forgotten or ignored piece of equipment that was issued to GI's very very late in the war.

Now it is worth noting that our research has yet to identify a 29th Division soldier using the M1944 pack system and there has yet to be found any documentation of the issue of the packs to the 29th division.

That being said we do have evidence of the 29th using the 1943 Field pack or the "ETO Pack" as some collectors call it so the chances of a fresh replacement coming in to the unit with an m1944 pack in May 1945 isnt outside the realms of possibility.

We tend to show these packs off on display during the winter period at shows where we potray the 29th in May 1945 at the end of the war and is the only time that the M1944 pack will make an appearence in our unit.

The M1928 Haversack was the main pack worn along with musette bags and the ocasional 1943 field pack during 1945.

The pack has a detachable section which was secured using 4 quick release straps. The pack could be left in a fox hole without dismanteling the whole webbing assembly.

This view allows you to see how all the straps work with each other and how the pack fits to the 44 suspenders.
